Georgia Teaching Fellows
Georgia Teaching Fellows can choose to teach in cities across the state. Those in smaller districts enjoy unique access to leadership and build deep ties to their communities.
A GOOD FIT - Teaching Fellows can teach in cities across the state, including urban Atlanta, mid-sized cities of Augusta and Columbus, and small towns in Southwest Georgia. Partner districts may have 100 schools, or just seven, but Fellows say they all share a friendly southern charm.
A DIRECT LINE TO LEADERSHIP - Small districts mean big access to leaders, to recognition and to advancement. Teaching Fellows may interview with the superintendent, propose new programs, present to the school board, and be groomed for school leadership roles.
A BIG FAMILY - Teachers in rural areas build deep ties with the community, which revolves around football on Friday and church on Sunday. “I know everyone – board members, principals, teachers – on a first name basis. It’s a big family,” said Dione Bonds, a Fellow in Augusta.
A STRONG REPUTATION - The state is open to innovation and considers Georgia Teaching Fellows, and its parent organization TNTP, the gold standard for educational reform. Partner districts respect the Teaching Fellows program, tapping the program staff to share recruitment strategies or conduct professional development for all teachers.
Eligibility requirements are dictated by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission and are non-negotiable. To be considered for our program, you must meet all of the requirements outlined below, plus academic requirements for your subject area:

- A Bachelor’s Degree (conferred by June 15, 2014).
- Have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.5 or higher.
- Meet all legal requirements to work in the United States.
- Pass a criminal background check, drug test and TB test before the start of school.
- Meet all subject-area testing requirements prior to the start of pre-service training in May. Detailed information about testing will be emailed to you during the application process. Testing dates are limited, with some tests offered only in Georgia. We urge you to apply early to maximize opportunities to take and pass required exams.
- Meet subject-area credit requirements in accordance with Georgia state law.
- You cannot possess or be working toward a teaching license/certificate from any state unless it is a substitute certificate or other non–teacher of record certificate.Candidates with some prior education coursework or an education degree are welcome to apply if student teaching was not completed.
- Georgia Teaching Fellows will consider applicants who have previously enrolled in an alternative certification program if it was not in the state of Georgia. Applicants who completed any other alternative certification program are not eligible.
- Graduates of foreign universities or individuals who earned credits through a study abroad that are not reflected completely (including course code, course title, credits earned and grade earned) on their undergraduate transcript MUST have their foreign transcripts evaluated by an approved foreign credential evaluation agency in order to be admitted to our program. This process can take more than a month to complete.
